Doctors’ Recommendations
What do doctors recommend around breastfeeding?
Breastfeeding is the gold standard of feeding for newborns and infants. Health professionals are being increasingly encouraged to support women in making the choice to breastfeed their infants due to its health, nutritional, immunologic, developmental, psychological, social, economic, and environmental benefits. Breastfeeding is linked to a lower risk of many infections, diseases & conditions, and other health complications for both mother and baby. It is recommended that babies be fed with only breast milk for the first six months of life, and breastfed for twelve months and after as long as it is still desired by both mother and infant.
The most respected health and medical organizations in the United States and the world recommend breastfeeding to all mothers. These organizations are committed to increasing the number of women who begin breastfeeding and continue until their babies are 6 months or older. They aim to promote and support breastfeeding practices with the ultimate goal of improving the public’s health. Below are links to the breastfeeding recommendations of each organization.
For more organizations and advocate groups that support breastfeeding, please see “Resources.”
